Mercedes-Benz has closed the gap (kind of) between the AMG GT and the SL by updating the roadster recently. Despite not being brand new, the facelifted SL has a redesigned front fascia, amongst others, which brings it closer to newer models in the 3-pointed star’s lineup.

Over the years, there have been some voices claiming that perhaps it’s time for the SL to go “back to basics” and add gullwing doors once again, on a coupe version, just like the 300 SL. However, the German brand released the SLR, back when Mercedes used to own 40 percent of McLaren, which stayed in production for 7 years, until 2010.

The SLS AMG had gullwing doors, a very cool feature that none of its rivals could match for drama – not even Lamborghinis with their scissor doors. Mercedes then released the roadster version, to keep its sun-loving customers happy, but after less than five years, the SLS production came to an end.

Then the AMG GT was introduced and, despite many expecting it to be an SLS successor, its performance, size, and price put it in another, slightly lower, class. Not to mention that it lacks those distinctive gullwing doors…

At the LA Auto Show, which opened its doors last week, the brand launched its “new” SL. This is a midlife cycle facelift bringing the usual tweaked front and rear fascias, some modifications in the cabin, a new 9-speed auto transmissionand slightly more power for the entry-level SL 400.

But what if the car manufacturer will decide to go all crazy on us and release a coupe version of its popular roadster?

Then it might look like this and, despite probably clashing with the AMG GT, it may be on to something, with its sloping roofline, a boot that might actually be usable and, why not, even rear seats. However, this only exists in the virtual world and it’s safe to say Mercedes will not make it as it does not makes sense risking one of its models cannibalizing the other .

This can’t stop us from playing the “what if” game, of course. Who knows, maybe some day they’ll drop the folding hard-top thing on the SL and make a coupe and a soft-top convertible again. If so, we’d like those gullwing doors back, please…
