Back in April, a month after Kia debuted the Optima Sportspace Concept in Geneva, a report emerged claiming that the Koreans would not build the Station Wagon, but these spy shots clearly say otherwise.
Not only is Kia going to produce an estate variant of the new Optima, but judging from this prototype, it’s practically ready for a world premiere, which could happen at next year’s Geneva Motor Show in March.
The concept received plenty of praise for its dynamic looks that combined a sweptback roofline with a shooting brake rear end and muscular fenders. Kia’s designers appear to have slightly backtracked on the production car placing a bit more emphasis on practicality and space, giving it a taller roof, while also doing away with the study’s beefy fenders, making it look more like a station wagon and less like a Shooting Brake-style car.
However, we’ll have to wait and see it without the obstructing camouflage at the rear to pass final judgment on its design.
Elsewhere, it will be the same car as the latest generation of the Optima, sharing the sedan’s engine lineup, which in Europe, include a 141PS (139hp) 1.7-liter diesel and a 163PS (161hp) 2.0-liter petrol, with additional units to be added in 2016.
As for the question that’s probably on your mind, we don’t know at this point if Kia will bring the estate version of the Optima to North America.
