Subaru’s industry-first Peer-Thru 360 video technology not only provides a full 360º view, but also allows users to see through the roof of a car.

In this case, we’re talking about a WRX STI rally car driven by 2015 Rally America Champions David Higgins and Craig Drew, giving us a rather unique POV. At the forefront of this technology is Subaru’s Motorsports app which features high-definition 360º video – also compatible with VR headsets and is available on multiple social media platforms.

Subaru Marketing Manager Rob Weir said that “This evolution of our 360º video capability puts the viewer even closer to the driver’s seat. We’re excited to debut this enhanced viewing ability than can be seen on our motorsports app along with YouTube and Facebook.”

Subaru filmed their first peer-thru 360º footage during the 2015 Lake Superior Performance Rally in Michigan – an event won by David Higgins, also marking an undefeated season in the Rally America Championship.

The Subaru Motorsports App is available on the iTunes App store as well as the Google Play store, and while you’ll have the best user experience on a mobile device, you can just as easily check out the video on your desktop computer.

After a few minutes of watching and using the 360º Peer-Thru tech, we can definitely say that it makes for a fun, interactive experience. At certain points, it almost looks unreal, sort of like a simulation, but that’s just the unfamiliarity factor.

Also, nothing wrong with watching a WRX STI in action, is there? Especially if you’re lucky enough to be using a VR headset.
