Can a diesel engine sound good? Ac Schnitzer thinks so.
Truth be told, the diesel engine wasn’t very loved by the majority of petrolheads; partly because it was heavy, low-revving, noisy and not that refined, and partly due to its lack of pleasant exhaust notes – among other key differences.
Nowadays (thanks to the advances in technology) the diesel engine almost runs with milk and honey and can keep up with its petrol counterpart. Nonetheless, no matter how you put it, it still can’t match the tonality of a gasoline powerplant, whether we’re talking about V6s, V8s, and even V10s or V12s.
AC Schnitzer is apparently very aware of the diesel’s lack of aural excitement, and that’s why it offers sport acoustic systems for some BMW diesel cars. With various sound modules for the X3, X4, X5 and X6 models, consisting of a stainless steel silencer with 2 “Sport” tailpipes, the tuner provides a total of six different exhaust notes to choose from once the system is installed on a vehicle.
Controlled by a remote, the system apparently manages to make the X-series models sound menacing even at low revs. Granted, the noise isn’t as pure as the one made by a petrol-powered mills, but it’s still pretty impressive, especially as it can be changed according to the customer’s preferences. If it didn’t made the specific diesel clank at idle, it could’ve easily fooled us.
