Fiat is said to have given the go-ahead for a high-performance Abarth variant of the 500X crossover to be launched in 2017.
An Abarth-tuned version of the Fiat 500X could be launched alongside an Abarth 124 Spider as both vehicle’s use the same 1.4-liter Multiair petrol engine delivering 138 hp. It is suggested that Abarth is comfortable of extracting 170 hp from that engine and then offering it in both the 500X and 124 Spider.
As for the 500X, Autocar says that upgraded engine would be paired with either a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission or instead a six-speed manual gearbox driving all four wheels. Beyond its improved engine, an Abarth 500X would inevitably receive a selection of distinct styling and aerodymamic elements including custom badging, graphics and a selection of bespoke wheel packages.
Some other likely styling modifications would include enlarged air intakes, larger brakes and a bolder rear-end possibly incorporating a wing and diffuser.
When launched, the Abarth 500X will rival the likes of the Nissan Juke Nismo RS and Mini Countryman JCW.
