Hydrogen-powered vehicles are an important part of the automotive industry’s future as more and more manufacturers turn their heads towards such models.
With the recently launched Toyota Mirai or Honda Clarity stealing the limelight, the Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell Vehicle that was presented a couple of years ago gets overlooked.
However, the South Korean-based brand is back with additional info on its “green” SUV, as it managed to set a new land speed record for a production hydrogen-powered crossover.
The record was set last month at the Soggy Dry Lake Bed in California, and while it doesn’t look that impressive, this Tucson reached a top speed of 94.6 mph (152.2 km/h) – more than adequate in the real world, especially for such a vehicle. Nevertheless, production of hydrogen-powered vehicles is still in its early years and it represents an alternative to electric-powered cars and to models that use fossil fuels.
The first production Hyundai Tucson FCV was delivered to its US owner back in June 2014 and, since then, the company has rolled off close to 100 units. The small SUV is available in Southern California for a 3-year lease with a $2,999 down payment and $499 per month, and it has an EPA-estimated driving range of 265 miles (426 km). Refilling its tank with hydrogen takes just a few minutes.
