Lots of automakers, especially premium ones, are pushing forward with the development of semi-autonomous driving technologies and Jaguar appears to be behind the ball game.
However, the British firm has revealed that it does possess the technology to create semi-autonomous cars, but is refusing to release them to the market due to danger concerns, particularly after viewing Tesla’s Autopilot.
During an interview with Mashable recently, XF project manager Stephen Boulter revealed his concerns about autonomous driving tech, as they could create a false sense of security in drivers. If such driving systems were completely reliable, then that would be fine. Right now, they still have glitches and far from perfect.
Just like the updated Tesla Model S and Model X, the new XF is installed with a range of cameras and radar sensors to operate its Adaptive Cruise Control system. When combined with electric steering, implementing a semi-autonomous driving mode would logically be the next move. Jaguar though refuses to do so as it believes such systems aren’t ready for production.
Boulter also expressed his concerns about Tesla’s Autopilot system. “If something happens [with Autopilot], it could set the technology back a decade”, he explained, referring to a possible fatality caused by the system that would massively dissuade drivers from autonomy.
While the brand doesn’t have plans on introducing semi-autonomous tech, Boulter did confirm it is indeed developing fully autonomous cars and will soon begin tests near its headquarters in Gaydon, England.
Boulter’s comments come just a week after BMW criticised Tesla’s Autopilot system as not being fully developed and ready for consumers.
