Lamborghini is on track to smash its all time sales record with estimates suggesting the marque will have sold over 3000 cars during 2015.
Last year, Lamborghini celebrated a new record of 2530 vehicles finding new homes and 2015’s figures will easily eclipse that figure. This is particularly important for the company as in order to develop and launch its third model, an SUV dubbed the Urus and recently confirmed to use a twin-turbo V8, it needs a lot of money.
“We need to put a lot of money down to produce the third model. Investment is high on the Urus and therefore we need to have a stable sales performance on the Huracan and Aventador,” said Lamborghini chief executive Stephan Winkelmann to Autocar.
When the Lamborghini Urus hits the market in 2018, it is hoped that it will increase the marque’s annual sales to between 5000 and 6000 vehicles. Unlike Ferrari which has had a cap on sales for many years, Winkelmann said Lamborghini won’t implement a cap but to retain the exclusivity of its models, will ensure supply remains less than demand.
This week, Winkelmann and R&D chief Maurizio Reggiani announced that the Urus will be powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 rather than either the V10 or V12 used by the Huracan and Aventador. Importantly, that engine will be bespoke for Lamborghini rather than being borrowed from another vehicle in the Volkswagen Group.
