If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if the greatest ever went up against the greatest, Porsche is offering one heck of an explanation.
What do the new 911, Maria Sharapova, Muhammad Ali and Magnus Carlsen have in common? First of all, they’re all great at what they do. The same goes of course for the Porsche 911. It’s an automotive icon and has pretty much set a benchmark as far as sports cars go throughout history.
So how do you improve if you’re already the best? Well, you challenge yourself, that’s how. That’s the idea behind this commercial, it’s 911 vs 911, and Sharapova, Ali and Carlsen against themselves.
By the way, if you think Magnus Carlsen doesn’t belong with these other bigger names, just know that at age 25, he is the highest ranked chess player in the world and reigning World Chess Champion. If those electronics on the 911 could ever directly challenge the mind of a human being, Carlsen would probably give them a run for their money.
Also, they obviously couldn’t get the real Ali to do this video so they went with a “discount” version, which turned out pretty well from a visual perspective – you can see more of that in the “Behind the Scenes” video.
Anyway, the point Porsche is trying to get across is that in order for them to make the 911 even better, they had to challenge themselves as if their main rivals were all 911s. It’s a cute metaphor, and a clever commercial, but nonetheless true.
The 911 has forever evolved from within and odds are that’s never going to change. Whether it’s a facelift, or a new-generation model, whether it’s turbocharged (which now it is)…the blueprint stays the same.
