It was only unveiled a couple of days back, but fresh reports on the new Volvo S90 keep coming in.
The latest one says that the Swedish flagship model might gain a new three-cylinder hybrid, with Autocar quoting Volvo senior vice president of research and development, Peter Mertens, who said that the future “40 models” will get it under their hoods, referring to the upcoming XC40 too, and so will the “60 models“.
The company’s boss continued to say that the new powertrain is also suitable for the SPA platform as well, which is used on the S90 and on the XC90 SUV.
“That engine [the 1.5] will definitely be used in the 40 models [believed to be S40, V40 and XC40] and 60 models – so it goes across CMA and is also suitable for our larger Scalable Platform Architecture.”
The new 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbo petrol that is being developed as part of Volvo’s joint venture with Geely, will reportedly replace the 1.6-liter four-cylinder units in Volvo’s lineup and will be turbocharged, on Swedish vehicles at least, because some Geely cars are believed to get naturally aspirated variants too.
