Even though the P90D could always launch itself forward like a bat out of hell, now it has a special mode designed to do just that.
Hitting 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 3 seconds is the ultimate achievement for any car. Whether or not the Chiron will be able to do the gallop in under 2 seconds remains to be seen, but so far, the Model S can make supercars shiver.
This particular Model S is running the updated 7.0 software which comes with this new launch mode that seems to work exactly like any conventional launch control system.
You hold down the brake pedal, floor the accelerator, release the brake and… off you go! The guy’s reaction at the end should confirm what you’re probably already thinking: it’s amazing.
Just by watching the video you can see the way the Tesla accelerates, which is rare because, generally, footage filmed from a dash cam doesn’t capture “speed” all that well, unlike a rear mounted camera or a camera mounted low on the spoiler.
During the tests, the P90D was able to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.82 seconds and 100 mph (160 km/h) in 7.46 seconds. It went on to cover 1/8 mile in 7.11 seconds at 98.1 mph (157 km/h) and finish a 1/4 mile run in 11.27 seconds at 118.7 mph (191 km/h).
True, not quite a 10-second car, but it comes close. Plus, should we even care? The P90D will blow your mind regardless.
