Despite being launched to rival the latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the new BMW 7-Series falls short in that it isn’t yet available in the same number of versions or with such an extensive range of engines.
In order to make up for this, BMW is apparently working on not one, but two new 7-Series models powered by a 6.6-litre V12 engine. According to BMW Blog, that V12 will be borrowed straight from Rolls-Royce and initially offered in the 760i and 760Li models. When installed into these cars, the engine could deliver around 600 hp.
Furthermore, a more performance-focused 7-Series with a V12 could be on the horizon. Tentatively dubbed the M760i, it would utilise the same engine albeit modified to deliver well in excess of 600 hp and potentially near the 650 hp mark. If that model does become a reality and includes the M badge in its name, then it would likely receive a number of other upgrades to distinguish it from lesser models, including retuned suspension and beefed-up brakes.
The same report goes on to state that both cars could utilise an 8-speed automatic transmission and given their power outputs, could be available with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. At this stage however, that final point is up for debate with a rear-wheel drive configuration also possible. After all, the 621 hp S65 AMG is rear-wheel drive so BMW could go down a similar route.
It is reported that these two new variations could be introduced as soon as 2016, likely at a major auto show.
