The next generation of the BMW 5-Series is in development, with its launch expected in the first half of the year.
A test mule of BMW‘s answer to the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class was caught on camera in Germany. The camo of the prototype doesn’t reveal its final design yet, but the safe bet would be that it will be evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
The all-new 5-Series will be based on the platform of the 7-Series and it will combine lightweight materials such as magnesium and carbon fiber to shed as much as 100kg (220 pounds) from its total weight. The premium saloon, code-named G30, will be similar in size to the current generation, which stands at 4.9 meters (193in) in length and 1.9 meters (74in) in width. The wheelbase though might grow just a bit from the current 2,969mm (116.9in)to increase cabin space.
The engine lineup will include four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel units, along with a plug-in hybrid with the same powertrain as the X5 xDrive40e, and the range-topping M5 will come with a twin-turbo V8.
As with the 7-Series, believed to be added to it will feature BMW’s latest tech, like a two-axle air suspension, four-wheel steering, a digital instrument binnacle, Remote Control Parking and the laser headlights.
