GM’s answer to the BMW i3 and the new compact hatch took center stage at Chevrolet’s stand in the 2016 NAIAS.

The Bolt is the production version of the study shown last year, and it will be priced from $30,000, after the $7,500 federal tax credit.

So far, apart from the price the only other figure that has been released is the compact EV’s range, which stands at more than 200 miles (322km).

Still, we do know that lightweight materials like carbon fiber, magnesium, aluminum and woven mesh were used to keep its curb weight down.

Sharing the limelight with GM’s newest electric vehicle is the 2017 Cruze hatchback. It follows the sedan, the main difference (apart from the rear bodywork) is the smaller boot. The hatch has a 18.5cu-ft (524 kt) cargo space, but fold down the rear seats and the number increases considerably to 42cu-ft (1,189 lt).

The five-door Cruze is 200lbs (91kg) lighter than its predecessor and it will be offered in two trim levels, the LT and the Premier, with the RS package as an option and a lot of equipment that includes MyLink with 4G LTE and Wi-Fi hotspot, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay compatibility and numerous active and passive safety features.
