The fact that Cadillac plans to extend its line-up with a diesel-powered car isn’t a secret, and the American manufacturer seems to be determined to go on with the project, regardless of VW’s big scandal.

But you might ask what does Volkswagen have to do with Cadillac and its future diesel mills? Well, the company plans to make its diesel offerings available in the United States as well – a market which could be scarred by the German automaker’s “little stunt”.

Nevertheless, Car and Driver reports that despite the emission scandal currently surrounding the automotive world, Cadillac will continue expanding its line-up with diesel engines, especially as the project is an advanced phase of development, as Cadillac CEO Johan de Nysschen stated:

“We pulled that trigger before the current dilemma. If you have gone that far in a program, you might as well carry it through.”

In other words, Cadillac can’t back down now even though De Nysschen apparently acknowledged that “the reputation [of diesel engines] has no doubt suffered a bit”. Still, he remains optimistic regarding the situation and apparently mirrors other car manufacturers decision to push on the diesel engine to U.S. soil.

Mind you, Cadillac’s diesel engines will be made available to other GM brands, even though de Nysschen concluded that the engines will be Cadillac and built to the maker’s standards.
