A Daytona 24 Hour-winning 1989 Porsche 962 is set to headline Mecum Auctions Kissimmee 2016 event running from January 15-24.
Expected to sell for between $2.5 million and $3 million, this 962 is chassis number 962-108 and took victory at the 1989 Daytona 24 Hours with Derek Bell behind the wheel. This 962 is unique in that it was run privately thanks to Jim Busby as well as sponsors BF Goodrich and the Miller Brewing Company and managed to outperform a number of factory entrants from Jaguar, Nissan and Porsche itself.
Beyond its win at the Daytona 24, 962-108 won at the Palm Beach Grand Prix and in 1988, came home second at the Daytona 24.
After its success in 1989, it was retired from racing and remained well cared for in a private collection. In 2005, it was reunited with Derek Bell at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2005, before the two also appeared together at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 2007.
Beyond being driven by Bell, it has also been piloted by the likes of Bon Wolleck, John Andretti, Brian Redman and Jim Busby.
Power for the car is provided by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder with one massive turbocharger resulting in comfortably more than 600 hp.
