Porsche’s exciting new 911 R is tipped to make its world debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March.

The automaker is remaining tight-lipped about the model but while speaking with Motoring at the launch of the facelifted 911 range about the car, the product line chief of the Porsche 911, August Achleitner, said “Come to Geneva and you’ll find out, but for now this is all I can talk about.”

If reports are to be believed, the 911 R will be based around the popular GT3 and capped to just 600 units worldwide. It will therefore be adorned with many of the same body panels as the GT3 but if the rumors are true, the 911 R won’t sport the GT3’s towering rear wing nor its massively-wide wheels and tyres and instead utilise slimmer tyres.

The real headline for the model will be its transmission. While all Porsche 911 models created by the company’s GT division are offered solely with automatic ‘boxes, the 911 R will come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, similar to the Porsche Cayman GT4.

Engine wise, there’s a possibility that the 911 R will actually be powered by the 500 hp, 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated six-cylinder engine of the GT3 RS, rather than the less-powerful 3.8-liter of the ‘regular’ GT3.

Even though the public has yet to see images of the car, it is widely reported that all examples have sold out.
