Since Mercedes has yet to bite the bullet and go after the BMW 3-Series/5-Series GT, how about we show you what the all-new E-Class would look like as a Gran Turismo-style fastback?
While most renderings can be beyond hypothetical, meaning they’re basically pointless, this one actually – while still fictional, is quite interesting for a number of reasons. First, it’s good to finally realize that Mercedes’ new design philosophy doesn’t really work that well when applied to a ‘fastback’.
Second, the artist had the presence of mind to slightly alter the front end of the car, which is a realistic assumption of what things would be like if Mercedes did decide to take the plunge.
Remember, the 3-Series GT looks ever so slightly different compared to the Sedan, whereas the 5-Series GT actually has very little in common with its four-door counterpart.
Design-wise, this car is sort of a mix between the all-new E-Class, and several other models from the German manufacturer’s range -notice the upright grille, altered headlights and the almost GLE Coupe-like rear end.
The 5-Series GT is a different animal compared to the regular 5-Series. It’s actually based on the 7-Series and offers luxury class rear legroom, together with SUV levels of headroom, so let’s face it, it’s all about size and practicality – which we’re not exactly getting from this rendering. In order for Mercedes to properly design a 5-Series GT rival, they’d need to do it from the ground up and probably base it on a stretched wheelbase.
