Mercedes-Benz is going after BMW and its X4 with their new GLC Coupe that was scooped testing in Sweden ahead of an expected launch later this year.
It’s the more sober or realistic and practical, if you will, production version of last year’s GLC Coupé Concept displayed at China’s Shanghai Auto Show, with the overall styling aping the bigger GLE Coupe, which itself, targets the BMW X6.
It may have an arching roofline and a squat rear-end that give it a sportier presence and stance than the squarer GLC, but everything else is shared between the two models, from the interior (albeit with a lower slung driving position and reduced headroom and load bay for the Coupe) to the platform and mechanical hardware.
As such, the engine range will initially comprise of the same four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, with the US to get the GLC 300 Coupe fitted with a 2.0-liter gasoline mill rated at 241hp and 273 lb-ft connected to the nine-speed G-TRONIC automatic transmission.
A sportier GLC 450 AMG with the same 362hp and 384 lb-ft of peak torque 3.0-liter bi-turbocharged V6 found in the C-Class should crown the range, unless Mercedes plans an even hotter, pure AMG version in the future, while a frugal plug-in hybrid variant may also be in the cards.
