Following a report released a couple of months ago, the new hydrogen-powered Mercedes was confirmed by Thomas Weber.
The automaker’s executive revealed the production model wiil be a version of the GLC equipped with “the newest fuel cell technology available“.
“We are in the middle of the car’s roll-out phase right now“, said the Research and Development chief to Autocar at the Detroit auto show.
The fuel cell Mercedes should take about three minutes to refuel its hydrogen tanks and it should set its future customers back for around £50,000 ($71,700) through the outright purchase program, or through a monthly lease in select markets.
Currently, other hydrogen-powered include the Toyota Mirai, Honda FCV Clarity and a future BMW model expected to be launched by 2020.
Weber continued to talk about a fully electric production car, a competitor to the Tesla Model S, but he declined to reveal which existing model in the company’s lineup would be used as a basis. He did not reveal when the vehicle will hit the market, but the report indicates towards a 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show unveil and a showroom arrival the year after. The car should have a total range of 250 to 300miles (400-480km).
