According to an analysis by a US consulting firm, 15 per cent of all automotive sales will be for fully autonomous cars by the end of the next decade.

McKinsey & Company, who published the study, cites the rise of driverless car technology, increased popularity of ride-sharing and the rapidly expanding market of all-electric vehicles.

The report is claiming vehicle ownership in densely populated areas is falling, as fewer young people current hold driver’s license. It says that the number of young people that can legally drive in these areas has fallen from 76 per cent in 2000 to 71 per cent in 2013.

Considering this and annual growth in car sharing programs, McKinsey & Company predicts that by 2030, 10 per cent of new cars could be dedicated shared vehicles.

As for fully autonomous cars, the first units are likely to hit the roads between 2020-22.
