VW will lift the veils off a new plug-in hybrid concept version of the 2017 Tiguan SUV next week at the Detroit Auto Show.

The news were confirmed by two sources to Reuters. Volkswagen wants to communicate their new focus on electric and hybrid powertrains after the emissions scandal as well as to enhance their US lineup in order to address the reclining sales.

Despite the fact that the German company has already shown a plug-in hybrid version of their new SUV, the Tiguan GTE concept at the last Frankfurt Motor Show, the new concept will be focused more for off-road use, offering the opposite recipe of the sporty nature of a GTE model.

The new Tiguan concept will use electric motors mounted at the front and rear axles in addition to a regular engine.

Volkswagen plans to launch 20 new plug-in hybrids or full-electric models by 2020 while at this year’s CES, they revealed a new electric concept, the BUDD-e as a spiritual successor of the Microbus.
