Actors are known for rocking up at awards shows and red carpets in all manner of cars but at Germany’s recent Berlinale film festival, Daniel Brühl arrived in a very special way.

Audi, an official partner of the festival, created a completely autonomous A8 L W12, which picked up Brühl and his girlfriend from their hotel before driving them without the aid of a chauffeur to the film festival.

Prior to the event, Audi created a detailed map of the route the A8 L W12 would take and then the journey began, with the car using its cameras, sensors and radars to compare architectural objects with those present on the map. To ensure the ride was as smooth as possible, the car was programmed to take corners slowly while accelerating and braking cautiously, just like a real chauffeur.

Brühl is best known for his starring role as Niki Lauda in Ron Howard’s Rush. He has also acted in other acclaimed movies like Inglourious Basterds, The Bourne Ultimatum, and is an Audi brand ambassador.
