While many automakers are downsizing their models and chasing fuel economy targets, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is seemingly going in another direction.
Last week, the chief executive of the conglomerate, Sergio Marchionne, revealed that the expanded Alfa Romeo range would be pushed back by a couple of years while also confirming that a smattering of new Jeep models and SUVs will be launched, making the most out of this booming market.
While the executive failed to reveal just what new models will see the light of day, Automotive News has a pretty good idea of what could be on the cards.
Starting with the Chrysler brand, we know that the all-new Pacifica will be retained as will the 300 sedan. The current 200 will be ditched, though a replacement and possibly a smaller 100 compact, could be outsourced, as Marchionne suggested. Acting as the firm’s third (or 5th, if the previous plans materialize) could be a full-sized crossover based on the Pacifica’s platform.
As for Dodge, the Dart will be canned while the Challenger and Charger will be retained. A brand new Barracuda could launch however, as may a redesigned version of the Journey.
Jeep’s fleet is tipped to expand the most following the introduction of a new Grand Wagoneer and the entry-level Wagoneer. Additionally, a replacement to the Compass/Patriot is under development as is a Wrangler-based pickup truck. A small A-segment Jeep is also expected to hit the market while the existing Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Wrangler, Wrangler Unlimited and Renegade will complete the range.
Finally, Ram’s offerings are expected to increase including the launch of a Chevrolet Suburban SUV rival and the retention of the 1500, 2500, 3500, ProMaster and ProMaster City.
