The latest Takata safety campaign involves Honda – and it’s a big one.
No less than 2.23 million vehicles are being recalled in the United States alone for the same issue that has plagued lots of manufacturers.
This time, affected models are include Acura’s 2005-2012 RL, 2007-2016 RDX, 2009-2014 TL, 2010-2013 ZDX and 20130-2016 ILX, along with Honda’s 2007-2011 CR-V, 2007-2014 Ridgeline, 2009-2014 Fit, 2010-2014 FCX Clarity, 2010-2014 Insight and 2011-2015 CR-Z.
The manufacturer will inform owners within 60 days with an initial notification letter; a second letter with instructions to pursue repairs at local authorized dealers will be issued later on. However, the safety campaign won’t kick off until summer, “due to the large volume of new inflators needed to repair vehicles“.
To rectify the problem, Honda will replace the PSDI-5 Takata driver front airbag inflators. Just like in other manufacturers’ cars, they may explode and spread shrapnel into the cabin increasing the risk of injury. So far, there are reports of such incidents.
