Amid VW’s emissions scandal that affected millions of cars worldwide, another massive recall campaign is taking place at the same time, on specific vehicles equipped with Takata airbag inflators.
Following Ford and it’s recalled Ranger pickup trucks from last week, Mazda has announced its own safety campaign for approximately 19,000 B-Series trucks from the 2007-2009MY fitted with the defective airbag inflators, that were sold in the United States, Puerto Rico and Saipan.
In these models, the Takata passenger-side frontal airbag inflators can explode and send shrapnel into the cabin, increasing the risk of serious injury or even death. Mazda is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this recall on its cars.
Just as in previous actions, the company’s dealers will inspect the examples and do the necessary replacements, free of charge.
The summary of Mazda defective vehicles equipped with Takata’s defective equipment included the 2003-2008 Mazda6, 2004-2006 B-Series, 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6, 2004-2008 RX-8 and 2008 MPV.
Approximately 5 million vehicles have potentially defective Takata airbags, from different manufacturers in the United States alone, as the NHTSA announced a new action that brings the total number of inflators recalled to 28 million and increases the sum of cars to 24 million.
