Volkswagen’s first product developed for the Indian market is a sub-4m sedan.

The Ameo’s official presentation comes after a few teasers released in the past weeks. It is based on the PQ25 platform used on the Polo, of which it is basically a saloon version.

Inside, it has a two-tone look and a familiar layout. In spite of being targeted at the Indian market, its equipment includes dual front airbags, an infotainment system with Mirror Link support, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, rearview camera, automatic climate control, automatic windshield wipers and a cooled glove box.

The base model local market comes with a 74PS (73hp) 1.2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine connected to a 5-speed manual gearbox. A 1.5 TDI diesel is also available, rated at 89PS (88hp) & 230Nm (170lb-ft, with the option of a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG.

Full specs on the “four-door Polo” should be announced at the 2016 Auto Expo India, where the car will be on display between February 5 and 9 before it goes on sale in the second half of the year.
