Mercedes announced that they will support this year’s Mille Miglia, which also marks the first time a W121 190SL to be participating in the event.
Several classic Mercs will be there to participate, including a 190 SL for the first time ever after the discovery of original documents confirming that such a model also took part in the original 1956 event.
The privilege for entering the modern Mille Miglia event is reserved only for cars that participated in the original and historic race of Mille Miglia, held from 1927 to 1957.
Mercedes has strong links with the famous Italian road race, including the win by Rudolf Caracciola and Wilhelm Sebastian in an SSKL in 1931 and the record run by Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson on board a 300 SLR in 1955.
Models like the SS and SSK will represent the era of the supercharged sports cars of the 1920s and 1930s. Several 300 SLs will be contending from the 1950s – plus the 180 D, 220 and 190 SL models.
The company will organize this year the Mercedes Mille Miglia Challenge on the sidelines of the actual Mille Miglia event, with a maximum of 60 entries, including all Mercedes SLs, AMG models and other special and historic concept cars.
The 2016 Mille Miglia will take place from 19 to 22 May, covering the historic course of the race from Brescia to Rome and back.
