Land Rover’s next next generation Discovery is going to get an extreme off-road version currently developed by JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations department.
According to a report from Autocar, Land Rover plans to offer a Discovery SVX version as part of SVO’s strategy to showcase the best out of JLR’s models in the luxury, performance and capability portions of the market.
With models like the freshly-revealed Jaguar F-Type SVR tackling the performance section and the Range Rover SVAutobiography having the luxury end of the market covered, SVO is working on their first proper off-road offering based on the upcoming Discovery 5.
Land Rover’s new Discovery is going to be revealed in full-production guise this year, with the SVX version to be launched 12-18 months later.
Although John Edwards, SVO boss declined to comment on specific models, he did recognize the need for an SVX model in Land Rover’s range. “The opportunity might be different from a market perspective, but it is obvious from a Land Rover perspective,” he said. “From an emotional perspective it is pressing that we do an SVX.”
