Jaguar’s next-generation XJ flagship saloon is set to evolve from its current form in order to survive in an ever-changing world.
According to Autocar, the all-new XJ, due in 2019, is expected to become more than simply just a large luxury saloon. An emphasis on green hybrid/electric drivetrains and the hardware necessary for autonomous driving is expected to be part and parcel of the new car.
The very existence of the XJ hung in the balance, as the car’s sales are only a small portion of rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series. Adding further to this, the newly-released Jaguar XF mid-size car is actually more spacious inside, despite being a class below.
So contentious was the issue of whether to proceed with another XJ that even Ratan Tata, whose Tata brand owns Jaguar and Land Rover was said to be included.
After careful analysis of growing S-Class sales (which defied industry forecasts) as well as the carbon-fibre intensive BMW G11 7-series, the decision was made to press ahead.
The new car is said to be loosely based on the XE and XF’s D7a aluminium, with carbon fibre intensive parts and utilize an all-new Ingenium V6 as part of its sole plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The XJ is Jaguar’s longest continuous nameplate, which began production in 1968.
