Have you bought a Tesla Model S P90D without the “notorious” ludicrous mode? Not to worry, as Tesla is willing to install it in your electric ride and make it 20% faster for $10,000.
Yes, the Californian automaker just announced that they’re offering the upgrade for all P90D owners, but the hefty price tag doesn’t include installation labor or taxes. So, is it worth having it?
Well, the car maker says it does make the car 10 percent faster from 0 to 100 km/h, decreasing the sprint time to 2.8 seconds, and 20 percent quicker to 155 mph (250 km/h) than a standard Model S performance.
Not only that, but Tesla will offer – included in the price – updated badging for the updated P90D, where the underline denotes the Ludicrous upgrade. Now, isn’t that the best deal in the world, or what?
It seems that getting the car to perform ludicrously takes more than a Wi-Fi update, as it requires replacing the standard fuse with an “advanced smart fuse” that controls current on the dot. The steel main pack contacter is swapped with one made of an Inconel (a high temperature space-grade superalloy) so it can cope with the heat generated from the surplus current, resulting in an amperage increase from 1,300 to 1,500.
