As the UK’s largest provider of pre-17 driving lessons, Young Driver is looking to do more than just deliver hundreds of thousands of lessons across the country.

They’re currently developing a two-seat electric car for under 10s, that’s been in the works for the past 9 months. These cars will feature twin electric motors, disc brakes, independent suspension, right & left hand drive steering plus an innovative system that detects obstacles and stops the car in order to avoid collisions.

Despite these cars being able to reach speeds of up to 10 mph (16 km/h), they will be fitted with a safety mechanism that ensures the car automatically cuts out if it is in danger of a collision, though parents will also be able to stop the car if necessary via remote control.

The official launch date is set for May 2016, when youngsters will be able to drive the vehicle at selected Young Driver venues in the UK – road systems will be created to allow drivers to experience complex maneuvering situations, junctions, reversing, parking and traffic lights.

Kim Stanton, director of Young Driver stated that “This is not a toy, it is very definitely a small car! We’ve had children involved throughout its development, working with the designers and engineers to ensure that it provides a realistic driving experience. The Gadget Show will allow us to get a wider cross section of ages and sizes behind the wheel, trying out our final pre-production models. All young test drivers at the Gadget Show will be able to tell everyone they were one of the very first people to give the car a try, and that they had a hand in its development.”

Young Driver will be at the Gadget Show, NEC from March 31st to April 3rd where 5-10s will get to experience this tiny new electric car. Teens between the ages of 10 and 17 will also be able to get some behind-the-wheel time of a dual control Skoda Citigo.
