The current F10-iteration of BMW‘s 5-Series has surpassed the two-million mark in sales, making it the most successful generation to date.

Compared with the previous E60 5-Series generation, sales of the current model have risen by more than 42 per cent, showing just how much more of a success the F10 really is for BMW.

Since the original 5-Series debuted back in 1972, BMW sold more than 7.5 million units. The current model played a crucial role in this success, selling 347,000 Sedans, Touring and Gran Turismo models in the last year alone.

All this reflects on the development of the next G30 generation, which is going to use a modified version of the platform that debuted in the latest 7-Series. BMW opted for an evolution of the current model’s shape instead of reinventing it. The new OKL platform mixes aluminum, magnesium and carbon fibre in its construction to bring the weight down and drive fuel efficiency up.

Nevertheless, the new model has big shoes to fill when it will hit the market in early 2017.
