BMW continues the development of the Z4 successor that’s expected to hit the market in late 2017 or early 2018.

Our spies spotted the prototype being driven on a frozen lake with the strategically placed camouflage still covering all the important parts.

One of the biggest differences with the current model is the return of the fabric soft top, with BMW ditching the folding metal top of the current model to save weight, lower the center of gravity and improve handling characteristics.

Apart from that, returning back to a soft top was a decision made because they also plan to offer a coupe version of the new Z4. The new model, which is reportedly going to use the Z5 moniker, is based on a new platform that was co-developed with Toyota.

This new architecture will spawn not only the new Supra model we’ve been waiting for so long, but a shorter version of it will also be the basis for the next GT86 coupe.

As for the new BMW Z4 (or Z5), it will use a range of the company’s latest turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines it .
