The fourth generation of Toyota’s pioneering “green” family car has been awarded with a 5-star safety rating by Euro NCAP, following a Top Safety Pick Plus received from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Building on the five-star performance of the second- and third-gen models and equipped with the latest safety technology, the new Prius has achieved a 92 percent in adult occupant protection, 82 percent for child occupants, 77 percent for pedestrian protection and 85 percent in the safety assist category.

Maximum points have been noted by Euro NCAP in thei side barrier test, rated with “good protection of all critical body areas“, along with another maximum score for the autonomous braking system, which is included in the vehicle’s Pre-Collision System and can detect and react to pedestrians and vehicles in the car’s path.

Toyota’s Pre-Collision System is part of the Toyota Safety Sense package that contains active features such as Adaptive Cruise Control with Full Speed Following function, Lane Departure Alert with steering control, Road Sign Assist and Automatic High Beam, coming at no extra cost, along with the optional radar-controlled systems that include Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Besides the 2016 Toyota Prius, Euro NCAP also had a go with the Suzuki Baleno, during its latest crash test session, which scored 3 stars in standard form and 4 stars when equipped with the safety pack.
