If you thought an all-electric Estate car would work really well in Europe, a 5-door hatchback model based on the Tesla Model 3 could make at least the same amount of sense.
The Tesla Model 3 is taking off right now. Over 325,000 people put their money down waiting for one and that is a truly staggering number. To put things into perspective, that’s twice as many people than those who ordered either a BMW 3-Series or a 4-Series in the US last year.
But since these renderings are hypothetical, talking numbers doesn’t really help – at least not as much as talking about different markets.
If a hatchback Model 3, or any other future hatchback Tesla model would make its way on European shores, it would first of all need to be a tiny bit smaller in order to contend with the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3, Mercedes A-Class, Lexus CT, Infiniti Q30 and Volvo V40.
Second, it would need to be priced competitively since it would probably cost more than it does in the US, while Europeans are already used to buying into the premium compact hatchback segment for around €25,000 – roughly less than $30,000.
For a long time, the automaker will have its hands full with its three-tier range, plus the next Roadster. With Elon Musk, though, you never know. The question is, would Europeans go for a Tesla in a similar fashion to the Americans?
