The M135 hatch and M235 Coupe/Convertible are said to be replaced in the coming months by the M140i and M240i, bringing them in line with the 340i and X4 M40i nameplates in BMW’s range.
While the moniker change was to be expected, BMW Blog reports that the new models will gain an extra 15hp from the turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine for a total of around 340PS (335hp).
The current M235i Coupe is powered by a 326PS (320hp in North America) version of the N55 TwinPower Turbo engine, making it capable of a 0-62mph (0-100km/h) run in 4.8 seconds when equipped with the eight-speed automatic gearbox (5.0 seconds with the manual).
The new models will reportedly continue to be offered with a choice of a six-speed manual or the ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. BMW will bring the M240i Coupe/Convertible to the US market, with the M140i hatch not making it across the Atlantic.
The engine update has not been confirmed by officials yet, but if true, it will bring the models closer to the M2 Coupe in terms of power. Whether it’s close enough to disturb the balance in the range, remains to be seen.
