With the Model S P85D and more recently the P90D conquering so many petrol-powered contenders in a straight line, it’s almost as if Tesla can’t do anything wrong when it comes to drag racing.
Truth is, it’s tough to beat a car with a sub 3 second zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) acceleration time. It’s even tougher when that car gives you 713 lb-ft (966 Nm) of torque the second you floor the accelerator.
But what about the slower, more affordable Model S 70D? Technically speaking, the ‘D’ makes it slightly quicker than the non-D version, which is real-wheel drive, but either way, it doesn’t come close to any of the more expensive models.
The Model S 70D has a top speed of 140 mph (225 km/h) and will hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.2 seconds. Pulling power is more than decent at 514 horses and 387 lb-ft (527 Nm), but then again the Lexus IS F is no slouch.
With 423 PS and 505 Nm (372 lb-ft) of torque at its disposal, the IS F can sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.8 seconds before maxing out at 270 km/h (167 mph).
Also, keep in mind this is a RWD vs AWD battle and that it takes place over a distance of half a mile.
