During its annual conference today, Google revealed a concept Android system for automotive applications in a Maserati Ghibli.

The whole purpose of this prototype is to showcase the possibilities of the Android platform for cars, taking the Android Auto on the next level.

The cabin now features a huge portrait-oriented touchscreen display on the dashboard, much like what Tesla uses in its models. This huge screen shows all the usual information, from the navigation to audio reproduction and from running applications to controlling the air-conditioning system.

Google has also replaced the traditional gauges behind the steering wheel with a digital display, bringing the most important notifications directly in front of the driver. Basically all of the Maserati’s cabin systems are now running Android, with the interface controlling even functions like the power windows and locks.

According to the Verge, these functions are previewing the extra abilities of the new Android N platform and the company’s will to power more parts of the car and not teasing the next generation of the Android Auto interface.

Since FCA announced their technical partnership with Google on self-driving cars, it’s only natural for the latter to use a Maserati Ghibli for this purpose.

Thanks to George for the tip!
