Launched in North America last fall as a 2016MY, the second generation BMW X1 has qualified for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick Plus.
The highest award was achieved by the compact crossover after its redesign boosted its performance in the small overlap crash test, where it earned a ‘Good’ rating, following an intrusion of approximately 4 inches (10 cm) at the lower door hinge pillar and instrument panel.
In comparison, the previous version of the German vehicle tested by the IIHS’ engineers had 16 inches (40 cm) of intrusion at the footwell, trapping the dummy’s right foot and crashing its way into a ‘Marginal’ rating in the small overlap test.
BMW‘s new X1 has joined its predecessor in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests with a ‘Good’ rating, while its forward collision warning system, which meets the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) criteria, has boosted it to the IIHS’ most advanced rating.
Some of the standard safety features in the latest iteration of the X1 include Dynamic Traction Control, Dynamic Stability Control, Cornering Brake Control, Brake Dry Assist, TeleService and Assist eCall, joined by the optional features that count City Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning and Frontal Collision Warning with Pedestrian Warning.
