Buyers from the UK who fancy their vans doing all the gearshifting work will be able to order select versions of the Mercedes-Benz Citan with a dual-clutch automatic transmission starting from June.

The new double-clutch gearbox comprises two sub-transmissions, each with its own clutch. As one transfers power to the wheels, the other one pre-selects the next gear.

Mercedes says this setup combines “the comfort of a six-speed automatic transmission with the driving dynamics of a manual gearbox in a compact and light-weight design” allowing for “near seamless gear changes without loss of tractive power, high levels of driving comfort and convenience.

Available as an option on the Citan 112 panel van and Citan 112 Tourer, dual clutch gearbox models return 35.8/51.4/44.1 mpg UK (29.8/42.8/36.7 mpg US  or  7.9/5.5/6.4 lt/100 km) in city/highway/combined and emit 144 g/km of CO2. Prices begin from £15,820 (equal to $22,885) for the 112 panel van long 6G-DCT and from £17,900 ($25,894) for the Tourer long variant, without VAT.
