The Germans at Mercedes-Benz are reportedly working on full speed to drop into the market four all-electric models by the end of 2020.
The plan involves two sedans and two crossovers, with each one of them to share basic elements of their conventionally powered relatives, including the roof structure and windscreen, Autocar reports.
The British publication says that the new EVs will have their own distinctive design features to make them ‘instantly recognizable as zero-emissions vehicles’. Mercedes’s new electric models are expected to rival the Tesla Model S and Audi’s production version of the E-tron Quattro concept among others.
Although information is really limited at the moment, it is understood that Mercedes will use some structural components of the C-Class and S-Class for the two electric sedans and from the GLA and GLC for the electric crossovers.
A modified version of the platform used in the B-Class Electric Drive will be used in the GLA-based electric crossover, with the rest of the planned EVs to use a new variant of the company’s MRA platform, designed specifically for electric models.
This new platform can spawn models with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive in combination with up to three electric motors. Speaking of which, Mercedes is currently developing its own range of electric motors, ranging in output from 101hp to 536hp.
The company’s battery partner Accumotive is going to provide the lithium-ion battery packs for the new EVs with the minimum offered driving range set to 250 miles.
