A severe crash involving three drivers brought the Austrian round of the European F3 Championship at the Red Bull Ring at a sudden stop.
American driver Ryan Tveter had an exit on the gravel trap which sent a cloud of dust over the spot. That’s when his team-mate Peter Zhi Cong Li smashed into the rear of Tveter’s car, launching his car into the air and rolling multiple times mid-air.
Pedro Piquet then also crashed with Tveter, with the Brazilian’s car sliding off the track and into the gravel and the protective tire wall.
Li was airlifted to the hospital where he was diagnosed with multiple broken heel bones and four fractured vertebrae. Ryan Tveter was also transferred to the hospital where he was discharged with heavy knee bruising.
“Following initial assessment at the medical center, Peter was transferred to a University hospital by helicopter,” said Carlin team in their statement. “Peter is undergoing treatment for multiple broken bones in his heel, which will require surgery in the near future. Peter has also been diagnosed with four fractured vertebrae which do not require surgery. While suffering with other bruising and small injuries, Peter is alert and speaking with team personnel.”
