Subaru of America has announced a new safety campaign, covering the Legacy and Outback, and has warned owners not to drive them until they are inspected and, if needed, repaired.
The recall covers certain units of the 2016 and 2017 MY Legacy and Outback, manufactured between February 29 and May 6, 2016 and the issue is a possible steering wheel defect. “The steering column on the affected vehicles may have been improperly machined, and as a result, turning the steering wheel may have no effect on the direction of the wheels“, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in its recall summary.
Subaru isn’t aware of any reports of injuries or crashes related to this defect, but the automaker did announce a stop sale on vehicles earlier in the week, after a customer reported with an issue with an Outback.
Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by the manufacturer and dealers will inspect the lot number on the steering column, replacing it if necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on May 13, and for any extra details on the topic, owners can contact Subaru’s customer service at 1-800-782-2783.
