Tesla Motors’ massive battery factory is less than two months from celebrating its grand opening.
The facility was only 14 percent completed earlier this month, according to Bloomberg, yet the announcement was made via an e-mail sent to customers who had won tickets to the event through the referral program, revealing the date set for July 29, that was posted on Reddit and confirmed by Fortune.
“We are excited to announce that the Gigafactory Grand Opening event will take place on the evening of Friday, July 29, at our facility outside Reno, Nevada“, Tesla wrote.
Covering 5.8 million square feet (538,838 square km meters), the Gigafactory had Tesla Motors cooperate with Panasonic and follows an investment of more than $5 billion. When it will operate at full capacity, it’s expected to double the world’s lithium-ion production capacity, used by the manufacturer in batteries for electric vehicles.
Mass-producing batteries at the facility outside Sparks has the automaker hoping to lower costs by at least a third and despite the ongoing construction at the plant, it is already rolling out batteries, introduced by Tesla in 2015, used to store solar energy at night, which are sold to building owners, companies and utilities.
