Fully autonomous driving technology is still a few years away from becoming available to the general public, but one of the closest things you can currently get is Tesla’s Autopilot feature.
The component equips the Model S, since the 7.0 software version, and it’s also available on the Model X, combining active cruise control, cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors and data to automatically steer the car on the highway, adjust speed according to traffic and change lanes.
Tesla’s gadget requires constant monitoring from the driver, who has to be ready to take full control of the vehicle at any time and if the system will lack data, then an alert will appear on the dashboard, while the car will continue to be steered automatically. Ignore the alert and a sound will be emitted, while the Model S/X will decelerate, activate the hazard lights and move the vehicle to the side of the road.
Over the last few months, we have seen people abuse the Autopilot feature, but the latest adventure is taking the whole experience to a different level and shows an over confident driver apparently taking a nap behind the wheel, while his Model S is autonomously driven on the highway, thus becoming a passenger while on the move. Is he being plain cool or just reckless? You be the judge of that!
