Set at the picturesque banks of Lake Como in Italy, the 2016 Concorso d’Eleganza managed to gather for another year the most exquisite metal of the automotive world.
It’s recognized as one of the most exclusive gatherings of classic cars and motorcycles, drawing the biggest collectors of the globe to showcase their most treasured items in front of the jury.
This year’s beauty contest was divided in eight different classes, with the selecting committee adding the “GT Man is back – The golden era of sportscar design, 1950 – 1975” class, which involves Gran Turismo models of the era and the “Driven by excess – Cars of the Studio 54 era, 1975 – 1986” class which bring younger than usual cars into the mix to appeal to both new entrants and audiences.
The rest of the categories include “Rally cars – Heroes of the special stage,1955 – 1985”, “Daring to be different – Design that pushed the envelope” which involves extremely boldly designed models and unique bespoke cars, mainly from the 1920s to the 1950s, “Pre-war decadence – Flights of automotive fantasy” and last, but not least “Pre-war supercars – The fast and the flamboyant”.
This year was also special thanks to BMW who revealed the pretty self-explanatory 2002 Hommage Concept based on the 2-Series Coupe model. The Bavarian company brought also the R 5 Hommage Concept bike as a tribute to their late 1930s motorcycle.
Aston Martin and Zagato also stole the show with the introduction of the Vanquish Zagato Concept, featuring a bespoke bodywork made out of carbon fiber. The design study is powered by an updated version of the 5.9-litre V12 engine, making 592hp (600PS).
