After securing year-old Ferrari engines for this season, it appears that Scuderia Toro Rosso’s ambitions for 2017 are much greater than what we’ve been led to believe.
Unlike last year, this time around Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost believes his team is in a much better position to get a good, up-to-date engine and get a deal finalized on time.
“We have to get the same specification,” said Tost during an interview with Autosport. “Because of last year’s late deicison, we were in the corner and we had to take what was offered to us. This year we’re in a different situation. We want the same spec next year.”
With the rule change in place for 2017, middle of the pack teams such as Toro Rosso will do their best to speculate their position and perhaps move up to a higher tier in terms of performance.
Even though it’s unclear what manufacturer will supply Toro Rosso with an engine next year, Tost is pleased with how Ferrari have treated them since restarting their relationship.
“We’re quite happy with the performance of the engine. From the performance side, Ferrari provides us with good material.”
In spite of that, the team only managed two decent results this year, namely the two sixth-place finishes in Bahrain and Barcelona with Verstappen and Sainz respectively. They remain 5th in the constructors’ standings, 39 points shy of Williams and just 4 points clear of Haas.
