Now that the Spanish Grand Prix has concluded and teams have settled into the first in-season testing session of the year, Williams have come out with a new rear wing concept that’s both radical and old fashioned at the same time.

Williams team development driver Alex Lynn took the “double-decker” wing out for the first time today, trying to find a better balance for this year’s car but also to potentially simulate downforce levels for 2017 when cars will look rather different. Lynn finished the test session ninth quickest, though as reported by Autosport, admitted that the team hadn’t allowed him to push very hard.

“The only laps I pushed were the end of the morning on the medium tire, so it was about getting aero scans for it and straightline speed stuff. It was a bit of a shame as it looked like it would have given some good downforce, but I wasn’t quite able to do anything on it.”

The 22-year old also suggested that the wing looks “old school” and that it “reminded me of that Senna Toleman at Monaco, one wing in front of the other.”

Felipe Massa will continue to put the wing through its paces tomorrow during the second day of F1 testing in Barcelona.
