Can’t get your hands on the new Ford GT? There’s only so many to go around, and they’re in high demand. But there’s always an example of the previous one going up for sale or auction. And this one stands out from the crowd.
What you’re looking at here is a rare pre-production prototype that preceded any of the commercially available examples that followed. Numbered PB2-1, it was the first example in the last batch of pre-production units built for development purposes before production got into full swing.
Like every other GT, PB2-1 pack a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine, a six-speed transaxle from Ricardo, and Brembo brakes. With 550 horsepower on tap, it’ll blow the doors off most anything else on the road, and keep running until it’s past 200 miles per hour.
This particular example also features optional extras like forged alloys, red brake calipers and McIntosh audio. The Ford Special Vehicles Team sold it at auction at the Shelby American workshop in Las Vegas, where Carroll Shelby himself signed the dashboard, along with the car’s designer Camilo Pardo.
Now it can be yours. PB2-1 is going up for auction in Monterey later this summer during the Pebble Beach festivities, under the auspices of Russo and Steele. We wouldn’t be surprised to see it set a new record when it does.
